# Getting from Doha airport into the city

The Doha Metro Red Line starts at the terminal and reaches Msheireb, a short walk from Souq Waqif, in about 20 to 25 minutes for QAR 2. A Karwa taxi takes 20 to 30 minutes for roughly QAR 40 to 55, and a pre-booked driver costs more.

## What's the best way from Hamad airport into Doha?

For most layovers, take the Doha Metro. The Red Line runs from Hamad International Airport's HIA T1 station to Msheireb, near Souq Waqif, in 20 to 25 minutes for QAR 2. Allow about an hour from landing to the platform and be back at the airport 90 minutes before departure, so a 6-hour layover gives about 2.5 hours in town. After about 1am, use a Karwa taxi or Uber.

## At a glance

- **Metro to Msheireb**: 20 to 25 min, QAR 2
- **Metro hours**: Sat to Thu 5am to 1am, Fri 9am to 1am
- **Taxi to Souq Waqif**: About QAR 40 to 55
- **Private transfer**: About US$39 to 51 to the centre
- **Ride-hail**: Uber (Careem has left Qatar)
- **Be back**: 90 minutes before departure, boarding pass in hand

## Metro: the best option for most layovers

Hamad International Airport (DOH) has its own metro station, **HIA T1**, connected to the terminal on a branch of the Red Line. Trains run about every 6 minutes.

- **Board the right train back**: from the airport, every train heads into the city. Coming back, board a Red Line train marked **HIA T1** (Hamad International Airport T1), because the line splits and other trains go to Al Wakra.
- **Journey**: HIA T1 to **Msheireb** takes about 20 to 25 minutes. Msheireb is the hub where the Red, Gold and Green lines meet.
- **Fares**: QAR 2 a journey in standard class, capped at QAR 6 a day. Goldclub is QAR 10 a journey.
- **Tickets**: buy a card from the machines. A Standard Travel Card costs QAR 10 and is rechargeable, or there are single-use cards for one journey or a day. Tap in and tap out every time.
- **Hours**: Saturday to Thursday 5am to 1am, Friday 9am to 1am. Hours change during Ramadan and Eid, so check the Qatar Rail app for the last train back to the airport.

### Which station for which sight

| Sight | Station |
| --- | --- |
| Souq Waqif | Msheireb (walk) or Souq Waqif on the Gold Line |
| Museum of Islamic Art, National Museum | National Museum (Gold Line) |
| Corniche | Corniche or Al Bidda (Red Line) |
| West Bay towers | West Bay QatarEnergy (Red Line) |
| Katara Cultural Village | Katara (Red Line) |
| The Pearl | Legtaifiya (Red Line), then the free M110 shuttle |

## Taxi (Karwa)

All airport taxis are run by Mowasalat under the **Karwa** brand. The taxi rank is at the left end of the arrivals hall.

- Cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted.
- Rough fares: QAR 40 to 55 to Souq Waqif or Msheireb (20 to 30 minutes), QAR 45 to 70 to West Bay, QAR 60 to 100 or more to The Pearl or Lusail.
- Karwa doesn't publish a full price list, so treat these as estimates.

## Uber

Uber works in Doha. At the airport, pick-ups are in a marked area of the **multi-storey car park**, not at the arrivals kerb: leave through Gate 3 and follow the signs. Careem, common elsewhere in the Gulf, stopped operating in Qatar in 2023.

## Private transfers

A pre-booked driver meets you in arrivals and charges a fixed price. It costs more than a taxi, but it helps when you land late at night, travel as a group, or want the return trip booked so you aren't hunting for a ride on the way back. Prices seen in October and November 2026:

- **Welcome Pickups**: about US$39 to 51 from the airport to the city centre, depending on the size of the car.
- **Viator**: a private Hamad airport transfer from about US$40 one way for up to 3 people.
- **GetYourGuide** also sells Doha airport transfers.

Book the return leg too, timed to get you back 90 minutes before departure. A transit tour includes both legs, which is often simpler on a short layover. See [what to do on a layover](https://dohalayover.com/itineraries/).

## How much time you'll have in town

There are no official figures for immigration queues, so plan on about an hour from landing to the metro platform. Then allow half an hour each way into town, and be back at the airport 90 minutes before your flight.

| Layover | Time in town |
| --- | --- |
| 5 hours | About 1.5 hours |
| 6 hours | About 2.5 hours |
| 8 hours | About 4.5 hours |
| 10 hours | About 6.5 hours |
| 12 hours | About 8.5 hours |

- **Why 90 minutes is enough**: you're already checked in. On the way back you only pass passport control and security, then walk to the gate, which closes 20 minutes before departure.
- **If you still need to check in** or drop a bag, allow longer: check-in at Hamad opens 3 hours before departure and **closes 60 minutes before**.
- **Busy periods**: at peaks such as Eid, the airport asks departing passengers to arrive 3 hours before their flight and queues at passport control grow, so allow 2 hours instead of 90 minutes.
- **Late at night**: the metro stops at about 1am. After that, use a Karwa taxi, Uber or a pre-booked transfer.
- **Fridays**: the metro doesn't start until 9am.
- **Tours**: Discover Qatar plans its own transit tours to drop you back at least 2 hours before departure, more than you strictly need.

## Phone data

Inside the airport, free Wi-Fi is enough. Once you leave, mobile data makes maps and Uber much easier.

- **eSIM**: buy a Qatar plan before you fly from a provider such as Airalo or Saily, and switch it on when you land.
- **Visitor SIM**: Ooredoo sells one in arrivals (QAR 35 for 5 GB and 7 days at its last published price).

## Luggage

Visit Qatar says the airport has no left-luggage service at present, so a layover is easiest with hand luggage only and checked bags sent through to your final destination. In the city, Bounce listed about 10 storage spots from about QAR 22.50 a day in October 2026.

## Questions people ask

### How long does the metro take from Doha airport to Souq Waqif?

About 20 to 25 minutes on the Red Line from Hamad airport's HIA T1 station to Msheireb, for QAR 2. From Msheireb, walk to Souq Waqif or change to the Gold Line for one stop.

### How much is a taxi from Doha airport to the city?

Roughly QAR 40 to 55 from Hamad airport to Souq Waqif or Msheireb (20 to 30 minutes) and QAR 45 to 70 to West Bay. Karwa doesn't publish a full tariff, so treat these as estimates. Airport taxis take cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

### How much is a private transfer from Doha airport to the city?

About US$39 to 51 to the city centre with Welcome Pickups, depending on the car, when we checked in October 2026. Viator's private airport transfer costs from about US$40 for up to 3 people (seen November 2026). GetYourGuide sells transfers too.

### Where do I get an Uber at Doha airport?

In a marked area of the multi-storey car park at Hamad International Airport, not at the arrivals kerb. Leave by Gate 3 and follow the signs to the Uber pick-up area.

### Is 6 hours enough to leave Doha airport?

Yes, if your passport is visa-free or you have a visa. After an hour to get out of Hamad airport, half an hour each way on the metro and being back 90 minutes before departure, you'll have about 2.5 hours in Doha. Even 5 hours leaves about 1.5.

### Do I need an eSIM for a Doha layover?

Not if you stay inside Hamad airport, where Wi-Fi is free. If you leave, an eSIM set up before you fly or Ooredoo's Visitor SIM from arrivals keeps maps and Uber working in Doha.
