Old Doha is compact. Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art and the Corniche are all walkable from one metro station, so even a 5-hour layover leaves about 1.5 hours for the souq and the museum park. With longer layovers, tours from the airport also reach Katara, The Pearl and the desert.

Short answer
If your passport lets you leave Hamad airport, a Doha layover of 5 hours gives about 1.5 hours in town and 6 hours about 2.5, enough for Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art park by metro. With 8 hours you can go inside the Museum of Islamic Art or take a desert and Inland Sea tour. With 12, add a second museum and sunset on the Corniche.
Before you plan, check two things: whether you can leave the airport on your passport, and what day it is. On Fridays the metro starts at 9am and the museums don’t open until 1:30pm. The Museum of Islamic Art closes on Wednesdays and the National Museum on Tuesdays.
5 to 6 hours: Souq Waqif and the waterfront
You’ll have about 1.5 hours in town on a 5-hour layover and 2.5 hours on a 6-hour one, once you allow for immigration, the metro and getting back 90 minutes before your flight. Getting into the city breaks down the timing.
- Metro from Hamad International Airport (DOH) to Msheireb (20 to 25 minutes).
- Walk through the restored Msheireb district to Souq Waqif: lanes of spice, textile and falcon shops, and plenty of places for coffee or a quick meal.
- Continue to the Museum of Islamic Art park (open 24 hours) for the classic view of the West Bay skyline across the water.
- Head back to Msheireb and the airport.
Prefer a guide? Discover Qatar’s 3-hour Transit Exclusive tour covers the Museum of Islamic Art, Katara and Souq Waqif from the airport. It needs a 6-hour layover, departs several times a day between 8am and 8pm, and starts from about QAR 115 a person (the price assumes five people sharing the vehicle). Book online or at the Discover Qatar desk in the Duty Free Plaza South, and be at the desk 90 minutes before the tour starts. If your passport isn’t visa-free, you can get the QAR 100 transit visa at the same desk.
8 hours: add the Museum of Islamic Art
Eight hours gives you about 4.5 hours in town, enough to go inside the Museum of Islamic Art as well as the souq.
- Metro to Msheireb, then walk to Souq Waqif for coffee or an early meal.
- Museum of Islamic Art (allow 2 hours; closed Wednesdays, and from 1:30pm only on Fridays).
- Walk the first stretch of the Corniche from the museum park for the West Bay view.
- Back through Souq Waqif to Msheireb station, and the metro to the airport.
On a Wednesday, swap the museum for the free Msheireb Museums (closed Sundays) or a short dhow cruise from the Corniche. GetYourGuide sells Qatar dhow cruises (opens in a new tab).
Transit tours you can book
The layover tours below collect you at the airport and bring you back; for the Viator desert safari, choose the airport as your pickup point and confirm the drop-off there before you book. The layover you need is the tour length plus about an hour to get out of the airport and 90 minutes back before departure, so roughly the tour length plus 2.5 hours. Discover Qatar sets its own, longer minimums. Prices were seen in October and November 2026.
| Tour | Length | Layover you need | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discover Qatar Transit Exclusive (Qatar Airways’ own) | 3 hours | 6 hours or more (its minimum) | From about QAR 115 (US$32) a person, five sharing |
| Doha city tour for transit passengers (opens in a new tab) (GetYourGuide) | 4 hours | About 7 hours | Live price on GetYourGuide |
| Doha layover tours (opens in a new tab) (Viator) | Varies by tour | Tour length plus about 2.5 hours | From about US$59 |
| Private 4-hour guided layover tour (opens in a new tab) (Viator) | 4 hours | About 7 hours | About US$109 |
| Desert and Inland Sea, private (Discover Qatar) | About 4 hours | 8 hours or more (its minimum) | From about QAR 227 (US$62) a person, five sharing |
| Doha layover desert safari with the Inland Sea (opens in a new tab) (Viator) | About 4 hours | About 7 to 8 hours, with airport pickup | From about US$55 a person |
- The GetYourGuide city tour takes in Souq Waqif, the Corniche, Katara and The Pearl.
- At night: Discover Qatar runs Doha at Night from about QAR 115. GetYourGuide lists a night layover tour with airport pickup (opens in a new tab).
- Tours on GetYourGuide and Viator are run by local operators. Before you book, check that pickup is at the airport and that drop-off is back there at least 90 minutes before your flight. If you meet the entry rules but are still refused at immigration, Discover Qatar refunds its own tours in full.
12 hours: museums, souq and sunset
About 8.5 hours in town: time for two museums, a long lunch and the Corniche at sunset.
- Museum of Islamic Art (allow 2 hours). I. M. Pei’s building holds a collection spanning 1,400 years of Islamic art. Tickets are QAR 50 at the door. Alternatively, visit the National Museum of Qatar, the “desert rose” building by Jean Nouvel. GetYourGuide has pages for the Museum of Islamic Art (opens in a new tab) and the National Museum of Qatar (opens in a new tab).
- Lunch in Souq Waqif, then browse the souq.
- Msheireb Museums: four restored heritage houses, free to enter (closed Sundays).
- Sunset on the Corniche: the 7 km waterfront curving from the museum towards West Bay. In the evening the dhows light up. GetYourGuide sells short dhow cruises (opens in a new tab). Viator’s 2-hour dhow cruise with a guided Corniche walk (opens in a new tab) costs about US$115.
- If time allows, take the Red Line to Katara Cultural Village for its mosques, amphitheatre and beach before heading back.
Alternative: spend the morning on a desert and Inland Sea trip, then return for Souq Waqif in the evening, when the falcon shops open.
Long layover: the desert and the Inland Sea
Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, is where the dunes meet the water in the south-east of Qatar. A half-day trip means a 4x4 drive over the dunes, and some trips add a camel ride. The drive there is long.
- From the airport: Discover Qatar’s private tour takes about 4 hours and asks for at least 8 hours between flights. Viator’s Doha layover desert safari (opens in a new tab) takes about 4 hours and costs from about US$55 a person (seen November 2026), with pickup at exit gate 4 in the arrivals hall. On a shared tour the driver may collect other guests too, and there’s no room for luggage, so allow about 8 hours.
- From the city: GetYourGuide lists Qatar desert safaris (opens in a new tab), but the cheaper trips often start from city hotels, so add the time to get there and back.
- Timing: book a drop-off back at the airport at least 90 minutes before departure. That assumes you already hold your onward boarding pass, because check-in closes 60 minutes before your flight.
- Heat: from June to September an early start is far more comfortable.
24 hours: stay the night
You can’t stay in the transit area for more than 24 hours. Within that limit you can sleep at the airside Oryx Airport Hotel. Beyond it, enter Qatar and book a hotel in the city. Flying Qatar Airways? Check first whether your fare includes a free transit hotel, or look at its stopover packages from about US$14 a person a night, sharing a room. The visa and transit page explains both.
- Day one: museum, Souq Waqif, Msheireb and the Corniche at sunset.
- Day two: a morning desert safari, or The Pearl (Red Line to Legtaifiya, then the free M110 shuttle) and Katara.
Tips that make a Doha layover easier
- Dress: cover shoulders and knees, especially in museums, mosques and government buildings.
- Heat: from June to September highs reach about 40°C with high humidity. Keep the middle of the day indoors.
- Money: cards work widely, but carry some riyals for souq stalls.
- Ramadan: no eating, drinking or smoking in public in daylight hours.
- Alcohol is served only in licensed hotel bars and restaurants.
- Photography: don’t photograph people without their permission.
